This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the ten characteristics of the self‑actualized person in Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy‑of‑needs theory and the components of the Perfect Human as depicted in Nahj al‑Balagha by Imam ʿAli (PBUH). The research follows a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, employing Bereday’s four‑stage model (description, interpretation, juxtaposition, and comparison). Data were extracted through systematic coding of the original sources—Maslow’s books and Nahj al‑Balagha—and organized into comparative tables. The findings reveal that both perspectives share several parallel features such as truth‑seeking, self‑awareness, independence of thought, profound psychological experiences, and empathy. However, Imam ʿAli’s (PBUH) approach interprets these traits within a divine and teleological framework grounded in an existential connection with God, whereas Maslow’s interpretation lacks a sacred dimension and approaches them mainly from a humanistic and secular standpoint. The results indicate that synthesizing humanistic psychological models with a theistic worldview offers a novel and integrative framework for presenting a more comprehensive model of human perfection—one that has not previously been elaborated in a systematic manner.
