Semiotics, as a discipline concerned with the analysis of signifying systems, provides a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of meaning production in religious and literary texts. Philip Hamon’s theory, by conceptualizing character as a semiotic structure composed of the signifier, the signified, and the levels of character analysis, offers an appropriate framework for examining how characters are represented in different texts. The Sermon of Hammām in Nahj al Balagha, which presents a comprehensive and multi-layered portrayal of the pious (al muttaqūn), is among the texts suitable for analysis through this approach. In this sermon, the character of the pious is formed through linguistic, descriptive, functional, and value-based signs, and is depicted as a collective character with a coherent structure. Using a descriptive–analytical method and relying on Hamon’s semiotic model, the present study examines the character forming signifiers, their semantic signifieds, and the way these signs are organized in constructing the character of the pious. The findings indicate that in the Sermon of Hammām, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) creates a network of spiritual, ethical, and behavioral signs through which he presents a model of the ideal personality and the desirable human being in Islamic thought, whose elements are interconnected within a meaningful structural relationship. Therefore, the Sermon of Hammām is not merely a collection of moral attributes; rather, it is a semiotic text that represents and constructs the spiritual–social character of the pious.
