Nahj al-Balagha, as one of the richest religious and literary texts in Islamic civilization, has always been the focus of researchers. Among its sermons, Sermon 193 (known as the "Sermon of the Pious" or "Sermon of Hammam") layers each of these codes conveys in the Sermon of the Pious, and what image of the pious and the culture of Imam Ali's (AS) era they represent. The findings indicate that the hermeneutic (enigmatic) code of the sermon, with three interconnected enigmas – the Imam's delay in responding, the nature of the attributes of the pious, and the mystical death of Hammam – keeps the reader in active suspense and leads them to search for the truth. The proairetic (action) code, through a sequence of scenes of nocturnal worship, reactions to verses of encouragement and warning, and finally Hammam's convulsion, presents a dynamic and cinematic structure of the pious way of life. The semantic (implicit) code, through metaphors such as "fear carved them like arrows" (Barāhum al-Khawf Bary al-Qidāḥ), "hearts are sorrowful" (Qolūbohum Maḥzūnah), and "profitable trade of the Hereafter" (Tijāratun Murbiḥah), makes abstract concepts concrete and tangible.: advice-seeking, familiarity with the manners of recitation, and understanding of Arabic rhetorical forms. The results also indicate that in this sermon, Barthes' five codes, harmoniously and complementarily, have created multiple semantic layers. This sermon not only draws an ideal picture of the pious but also, by utilizing semiotic capacities, provides the possibility of new readings appropriate to the requirements of any era.
