Social Capital in the Teachings of Nahj al-Balagha: A Foundation for Future-Oriented Governance in the Islamic Revolution

Abstract
Social capital, as the fundamental bedrock of good governance, plays a decisive role in fostering social cohesion, strengthening political legitimacy, and enhancing the resilience of governance systems. This study was conducted with the aim of extracting and elucidating the components of social capital from religious texts, with a specific focus on Nahj al-Balagha as one of the richest sources of Islamic knowledge in the field of governance. Utilizing the thematic analysis method with an interpretive-inductive approach, all the sermons, letters, and wise sayings of Nahj al-Balagha were examined and analyzed.The research findings identified and introduced four main and fundamental pillars of social capital in Alavid (Imam Ali's) thought. These include: 1) Trust and honesty as the cornerstone of the mutual relationship between the government and the people, 2) Participation and social solidarity as a necessary prerequisite for achieving sustainable development, 3) Observance of justice and ethics as the essential criterion in all actions and decisions of the rulers, and 4) Resilience and foresight as a strategic capacity for confronting future crises and challenges.This research ultimately concludes that by presenting this comprehensive conceptual framework, Nahj al- Balagha not only provides an indigenous and effective response to the challenges of eroding social capital in contemporary Iranian society but also offers a strategic roadmap for realizing a forward-looking, justice-oriented, and civilization-building governance within the Islamic Revolution.
